This technique was first developed for weight-loss surgery for treatment of gastroparesis, which is a diabetes-related problem which causes inability of the stomach to empty gastric contents into the intestines.
The technique was applied on four diabetic patients suffering from gastroparesis .They were unable to receive gastric pacemakers, they underwent sleeve gastrectomy to see if it can help.
This surgical technique,is known as a gastric sleeve or vertical or longitudinal gastrectomy, the is done by reduction of the stomach size to approximately 30 percent of its original size. The surgeon who leads the gastroparesis program at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia. is called Dr. Melissa Bagloo
Results After surgery, have shown that two of the patients did very well right away, but the other two needed nutritional support for several months. "But generally after passing of six months all of them were able to eat and drink well and were no longer felt nausea or vomiting.
Dr. Bagloo says that "the patient who should to use feeding tubes fore life , we cannot assure if the surgery is usefull for them"
Another advantage of sleeve gastrectomy there is no foreign material is left in the body and does not require battery changes. compared to implantation of a gastric pacemaker. It is less invasive surgery and will not prevent patients from living normal lives eating and drinking normally
