Blake Anthes is a success story for weight loss.
Blake Anthes
Age: 51
Town: St. Johns
Occupation: I am currently in the insurance field, but am in a career transition to public speaking and helping others/human
development.
Former weight: 325 lbs
Current weight: 200 lbs
Pounds lost: 125 lbs
How long it took: 6 months
Why I needed to change: After I turned 50 and had my annual physical, my primary care physician told me in no uncertain terms that if I wanted to avoid “weighty” issues such as diabetes and coronary heart disease, I needed to lose the weight; so I did.
How I lost the weight: I used a program called Medifast, which is a part of Take Shape for Life, recommended by my primary care physician. I ate six times a day, five pre-packaged meals and one “real meal.”
The six meals kept me from getting hungry and going to the snack cupboard. I quickly learned about portion control, how to balance proteins and carbohydrates, how to maintain a good, consistent metabolism and just general overall good eating habits. I stopped diving into the bags of chips at midnight, and replaced it with healthier foods. I was eating lots of lean meats and fish and low-carb vegetables.
With the help of registered dietitian/nutritionist, I was able to learn more about the food I was eating and that has carried over from the weight-loss part of the diet to the maintenance plan, where I have been able to keep the pounds off.
My greatest challenges: The greatest challenge I encountered was learning about food, specifically proteins and carbohydrates, and how they can affect my weight. But once learned, everything fell into place, and now I know what I can and cannot have, and I keep the pounds off.
My advice: The diet plan is actually easy. The most difficult part of any diet is the six inches between the ears. As I was losing weight, people would ask me how I was feeling. At first, I didn’t know what to say, because I really felt the same. But then it started to hit me: riding a bike was so much easier; walking up a flight of stairs didn’t take my breath away. I didn’t have to hold my breath tying my shoes. I really felt good, for the first time in a long time!
I am very fortunate to have the support of my family and friends who understood what I was trying to accomplish, and stood by me every bit of the way. Most importantly though, is everybody must have their own “why” — their very own reason or motivation for losing the weight. Mine was if I wanted to live a longer, happier, healthier life; to see my kids grow up and maybe see grandkids someday; to grow old (and healthy) with my lovely wife, I had to make a change — so I did.
